NEW GICLÉE STANDARDS SET IN THE U.S.
A new organization, the Giclée Printers Association, (GPA), founded by John S. Doe, President of Harvest Productions, Anaheim, CA. has set a new standard for the industry,
Tru Giclée.
The purpose of creating this trademarked name is to make known the high professional standards by which a Tru Giclée TM is made. Association members were concerned because Giclée was not trademarked, and the brand name was being distributed.
They refer to “the ‘faux Giclée’, which artists and publishers can innocently purchase, often disappointing them and causing them to eschew the Giclée process altogether”.
The newly formed GPA is a business-oriented group of printers who have common manufacturing procedures for producing Giclées, and have adopted the name Tru Giclée TM as a branding for their standardized process.
At press time, printers who had signed on included: Harvest Productions, Pearl Publishing, Classic Art Prints, Appligraph, Renaissance, Art Prints on Canvas, Giclée Art Editions, New Era, Island Colours, Déjà Vu, Swift Photo and Ideal Digital Reproduction.
All members of the GPA adhere to the nine criteria:
- The ability to exactly reproduce original artwork
- The reproduction process bears no evidence of the technology used.
- The printer adheres to archival standards consistent with that of a collectable fine art print.
- The reproduction represents the highest quality product available to this culture, at this time.
- The printer fully discloses the products used in his art reproduction.
- The printer enjoys a generally recognized reputation for honesty and integrity amongst his customers and peers.
- The artisan producing (or supervising the production of the work) has been certified as a Master Printer by the G.P.A.
- The printing company participates in an on-going research and development effort to improve his craft and the G.P.A.
- As a G.P.A member, I will actively educate my customers and the industry as to the meaning and value of a Tru Giclée TM. I will display the Tru Giclée TM logo at my business location, in advertising and at shows. I will encourage my customers to do the same.
Members receive a Tru Giclée lobby display, a CD with logos to incorporate into advertising materials, a small display for customers’ galleries and trade booths, small stickers to be affixed to True Giclée prints.
